Saturday, September 1, 2012 Marist was the lone Pioneer Football League team to pick up a win on the first Saturday of the football season, downing Northeast Conference member Bryant. Dayton and Jacksonville both fell to nationally-ranked FCS opposition while San Diego and Davidson also dropped their season openers.

NORMAL, Ill. – No. 19 Illinois State scored the game's first 21 points and did not look back in a 56-14 non-conference victory against Dayton, Saturday, at Hancock Stadium. Dayton got on the board late in the second quarter on returner Gary Hunter's 77-yard punt return for a touchdown. Illinois State responded quickly with a touchdown just before the half as part of a second 21-0 scoring run. The Flyers tacked on a second touchdown when quarterback Will Bardo found Branden Johnson for a 17-yard touchdown reception. Bardo completed 7-of-21 passes for 96 yards and finished the game with 111 of Dayton's 138 total offensive yards.

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern opened the game with quarterback Ezayi Youyoute's 79-yard touchdown run and didn't look back, defeating Jacksonville, 58-0, in non-conference action, Saturday, at Paulson Stadium. Jacksonville quarterback Kade Bell had 87 of his team's 178 offensive yards, with nine completions for 56 yards and five carries for 31 yards. Defensively, Marquise Dixson and Antonio McRae each had interceptions for the Dolphins as Georgia Southern attempted only eight passes while amassing 557 yards on 67 carries.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – San Diego trailed just 20-14 after three quarters but Cal Poly scored 21 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 41-14 non-conference win, Saturday, at Spanos Stadium. The Toreros closed to within 20-14 when offensive lineman Tobin Gramyk recovered a San Diego fumble in the end zone. However, Cal Poly quarterback Andre Broadus ran for two touchdowns and passed for another in the fourth to lead the Mustangs to the win. Broadousran for 113 yards on 15 carries and passed for another 135 yards, scoring four combined touchdowns. San Diego quarterback Mason Mills completed 15-of-27 passes for 138 yards.
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson got on the scoreboard first but Georgetown scored 28 consecutive points to escape with a 35-14 non-conference victory in a game whose start was delayed over an hour due to lightning, Saturday, at Richardson Stadium. Davidson took advantage of an interception when quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff found wideout Lanny Funsten three plays after gaining possession for an 18-yard touchdown strike. However, the Hoyas scored the game's next four touchdowns to break the game open. Carkhuff would find wide receiver Reese Williams late in the fourth quarter to end the Georgetown scoring streak. Carkhuff completed 32-of-53 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats rushed just 16 times for minus-eight yards. |
