INDIANAPOLIS – Junior defensive back Jayme Szafranski, who helped lead Butler to a share of the 2012 Pioneer Football League championship, has been named to the second team of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Football Team, chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  He's the fifth Butler player all-time to receive the prestigious honor.

Szafranski started all 11 Butler games in 2012, and he finished third on the team with 81 total tackles.  He ranked fourth in the Pioneer Football League in tackles among defensive backs and 13th in the conference overall.  He had three pass breakups and one forced fumble.  Szafranski was Butler's third-leading tackler as a sophomore in 2011.

This past season, Szafranski helped Butler to an 8-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the PFL.  The Bulldogs shared the PFL title with Drake and San Diego.

A finance major from Barrington, Ill., Safranski earlier was named to the Capital One Academic All-District V Team.

Szafranski is Butler's first football Academic All-American since 2009, when defensive end Grant Hunter earned the honor.  He's Butler's fourth defensive player to be named Academic All-American and the first defensive back.
