SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Patrick "Packy" Doyle made the most of his three-day rookie minicamp tryout with the San Diego Chargers last month as he was rewarded with a three-year contract on Tuesday. Doyle becomes the only rookie from a local university on the Bolts' 90-man roster, and also becomes the second Torero to sign on with Chargers. He is listed as a hybrid fullback in the Chargers' official announcement.

At USD, the two-time team captain and former tight end had 49 career receptions for 628 yards (12.8 yards per catch average) and five touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound target saw his best statistical season come in 2009, totaling 21 catches for 291 yards and three scores while being named the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player. During the 2008 campaign he hauled in a memorable 31-yard touchdown in the team's home win over scholarship program UC Davis. In addition, Doyle played a key role with the offensive line unit with both run blocking and pass protection.

Doyle joins the NFL ranks with recent teammate Mario Kurn who signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders. In addition, three former Toreros are currently on the San Francisco 49ers roster with former Torero head coach Jim Harbaugh - QB Josh Johnson, DE Eric Bakhtiari and DB Ben Hannula.
