NOTES FROM AROUND THE PFL

WEEK 10 IN REVIEW
The Tommies moved a win away from clinching at least a share of their first PFL title with a victory at Valparaiso… Meanwhile, the race for the PFL automatic bid remained deadlocked between Butler, Davidson, and Dayton… Dylan Sparks three-yard touchdown run in the second overtime helped Davidson survive a scare from Stetson, 56-48… Dayton raced out to a 35-7 first-half lead and didn’t look back in a 52-28 PFL victory against Presbyterian… It was Dayton’s 700th all-time victory, making them one of nine current FCS teams with 700 all-time wins… Grif Wurtz’ 79-yard fumble return for a touchdown set the tone early as St. Thomas secured a 34-7 victory at Valparaiso… Luka Suzak’s 56-yard field goal as time expired gave Butler a 26-23 PFL victory against San Diego… Marist scored the game’s final 10 points to escape with a 31-21 PFL victory against Morehead State… Stetson’s Brady Meitz threw six touchdowns, one shy of the PFL single-game record, on a day he threw for 379 yards in the loss at Davidson… Dayton’s Jake Chisholm recorded the league’s first four TD day against Valparaiso, running for three scores and catching another touchdown pass… Chisholm’s 156-yard rushing day was the best among the league’s runners in Week 10… St. Thomas’ Hope Adebayo ran for 128 yards, Morehead State’s James Louis had a 122-yard day, and Davidson’s Mark MCCurdy ran for 111 yards… Presbyterian’s Dominic Kibby recorded the league’s second 200-yard receiving performance, catching seven passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns… Butler’s Luke Wooten was the league’s only other 100-yard receiver during the week, catching 14 passes for 147 yards… Marist’s Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne had a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown… Dayton’s Alex Hirschfield returned a blocked punt back 16 yards for a touchdown… Jonathan Hammond followed up a 5.0 tackle for loss outing in Week 9 with 3.0 tackles for loss in Week 10, including 2.0 sacks.

ST. THOMAS PFL TITLE ELIGIBLE, INELIGIBLE FOR FCS PLAYOFFS
St. Thomas, in its second season as a Division I program, is eligible to win the PFL title and can clinch at least a share of its first crown with a win this week. However, as a reclassifying institution – moving from Division III to Division I – the Tommies remain ineligible for the FCS Playoffs due to NCAA rules.

TRIO IN THE HUNT FOR THE PFL AUTOMATIC BID
With St. Thomas ineligible for the league’s automatic qualifying spot, the bid is up for grabs. Entering this weekend’s action Butler, Davidson, and Dayton are in a three-way tie for the bid. All three have plenty of work ahead of them (see below) with the final week looming large.

THE RACE IS ON
Here is the upcoming schedule involving the three teams seeking the PFL automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. The regular season’s final week will have plenty of bearing on the race with the league’s current top four teams squaring off in two games that week.

  • Week 11: Davidson at San Diego | Butler at Drake | Morehead State at Dayton
  • Week 12: St. Thomas at Butler | Dayton at Davidson

BUTLER’S ZURAK, PRESBYTERIAN KIBBY EARN FEDEX WEEK 10 HONORS
Butler kicker Luka Zurak and Presbyterian wider receiver Dominic Kibby were among four athletes recognized on Week 10’s FedEx Ground FCS National Players of the Week by Stats Perform. Zurak was the National Special Teams Player of the Week after booting a 56-yard walk off field goal in Butler’s victory at San Diego. Kibby, the National Freshman Player of the Week, had seven receptions for 212 yards and three touchdowns against Dayton.

DAYTON REACHES 700-WIN PLATEAU
With its 52-28 victory against Presbyterian, Nov. 5, Dayton became the ninth current FCS program to reach the 700-win plateau. They joined a group that includes Yale, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, North Dakota State, Dartmouth, Delaware, and Lehigh.

SAN DIEGO’S SCORING STREAK HITS 250 GAMES
With Dayton’s consecutive game scoring streak ending this season, San Diego took over as the longest scoring streak in the PFL. The Toreros have scored in 250 games, with their last shutout coming at the hands of Dayton during the 1999 season.
