Butler took a 27-20 lead with 5:53 left in the game when Sam Brown found Johnny O'Shea on a six-yard touchdown pass. However, Stetson's Gaven DeFilippo piloted the Hatters down the field, hitting Justin Jordan with a 21-yard touchdown pass to complete an 8-play, 63-yard drive. The Hatters defense then forced a three-and-out and the ensuing punt went out of bounds at the Stetson 38-yard line. Running back Jalen Leary carried the ball five times for 55 yards on the Hatters final drive, setting up Messina's winning field goal. Leary finished with 111 yards on 20 carries while Jareem Westcott added 159 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Butler's Nick Orlando finished with 99 rushing yards, including a 62-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
