Valparaiso 24, Davidson 20
Valparaiso, Ind. – Cody Boxrucker ran for two touchdowns as Valparaiso scored 17 consecutive points and held on for a 24-20 victory against Davidson, Saturday, in Pioneer Football League action at Brown Field. Davidson grabbed a 13-7 lead when Taylor Mitchell found Cam Cheuvront for a 60-yard touchdown in the second quarter. But Boxrucker scored a touchdown on Valparaiso's ensuing drive for a 14-13 lead. He tacked on another touchdown late in the third quarter for a 24-13 advantage.
Davidson closed the gap when Mitchell found Cheuvront from six-yards out with 12:29 left in the game. The Wildcats final posession was halted by a holding penalty and a sack and the Crusaders ran out the game's final 5:48.
Cheuvront paced Davidson's offense with seven receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Jarrett Morgan had 25 carries for 108 yards to pace Valparaiso.
Drake 30, Morehead State 28
DES MOINES, Iowa – Morehead State saw a two-point conversion fail with 1:08 left and Drake escaped with a 30-28 victory, Saturday, in Pioneer Football League action at Drake Stadium. The Bulldogs took control with 30 unaswered points after Morehead State scored the game's first touchdown. Kicker Josh Lee made three field goals to start the burst before Terry Wallen returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown and a 16-8 halftime lead. Drake quarterback Grant Kraemer ran for one score and passed for another for a 30-8 Drake lead after three quarters.
Morehead State's fourth-quarter rally began thanks to an Braylyn Cook interception early. Eagles quarterback Austin Gahafer converted the turnover with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jake Raymond. He closed the lead further on the next MSU possession with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jake Sutherland. On the final Eagles drive, he completed back-to-back 20-plus yard passes before handing the ball to Adairus Barnett for a three-yard touchdown burst. However, his pass on the two-point conversion try failed and the Eagles could not recover the ensuing on-side kick fairly.
Tight end Eric Saubert caught eight passes for 136 yards and Kraemer completed 22-of-40 passes for 284 yards to lead Drake. Gahafer completed 26-of-50 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns, finding Raymond nine times for 179 reception yards.
Campbell 33, Butler 27 in overtime
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – De'Shawn Jones scored on Campbell's first play of overtime for a 33-27 Pioneer Football League win against Butler, Saturday, at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Camels led 20-10 at halftime thanks to Mitchell Brown's 49-yard field goal at the gun. But Butler scored the third quarter's only tochdown and after a Campbell fumble, Drew Bevelhimer hit a 22-yard field goal to start the fourth, tying the game, 20-20.
Each team scored a touchdown in a wild fourth quarter, keeping the game tied. Butler had an opportunity late in regulation when Ethan Brunhofer intercepted a pass at the Butler 35-yard line. Bulldogs quarterback Malcolm Weaver completed a pair of passes, but Bevelhimer was left with a 50-yard attempt that he could not convert. Butler had the first overtime possession and saw a first-down conversion negated by a holding penalty and saw a long fourth-down chance denied on a pass breakup, leading to Campbell's game winning score.
Jones amassed 174 yards on 23 carries, scoring twice to lead the Camels. Meanwhile, Weaver completed 14-of-37 passes for 194 yards to lead the Bulldogs offensive effort.
Dayton at San Diego
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes to secure a 34-22 PFL victory against Dayton, Saturday, at Torero Stadium. Dayton gained its only lead of the contest when Chris Hagan picked up a fumble and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown. The Flyers converted a two-point conversion after the score for a 22-21 lead with 12:29 left in the game.
San Diego did not respond until late in the contest when Tevin Heyward capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run for a 27-22 lead. On its next possession, the Toreros solidified their lead when quarterback Anthony Lawrence found Jonah Hodges for a 62-yard touchdown with 2:12 left. Dayton's final possession came to an end when USD's Jalen Smith sacked Dayton's Alex Jeske on third down and Colton Giorgi picked off a fourth-down pass to secure the win.
Lawrence completed 26-of-34 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns to lead San Diego while receivers Brian Riley (six receptions, 126 yards) and Jonah Hodges (six receptions, 122 yards) each had 100-yard receiving outings. Jeske completed 12-of-31 passes for 162 yards, but Dayton could not overcome a significant time of possession deficit that saw San Diego finish with over 40 minutes of possession time.
Jacksonville 24, Stetson 7
DeLAND, Fla. – Rylan Wells threw two touchdowns and Jacksonville posted a 24-7 PFL victory against Stetson, Saturday, at Spec Martin Stadium. The Dolphins scored all 24 of its points in the first half, Wells throwing touchdowns to Frantz Claudio and Brian Burnett to start and end the half, respectively.
Stetson broke through early in the third quarter. Hatters quarterback Gaven DiFilippo found Jonathan Jerozal for a 20-yard touchdown pass completion to cap a four-play, 66-yard drive. However, Stetson would not be able to close the gap further.
Wells completed 10-of-16 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. He found Brian Burnett five times for 115 yards and a touchdown. Stetson running back Cole Mazza finished with 112 yards on 16 carries, but did not score, while DiFilippo completed 13-of-25 passes for 117 yards.
