WEEK 5 RECAPS

San Diego 44, Butler 10
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – San Diego scored on its opening drive and never looked back, improving to 2-0 in Pioneer Football League play with a 44-10 victory against Butler, Saturday at the Butler Bowl.

The Toreros opened the game with an 11-play, 92-yard drive capped when Tevin Heyward dashed in from a yard out. San Diego would score the game's first 17 points, leading 17-0 at halftime, before Butler broke through with a Drew Bevehimer field goal midway through the third quarter.

But San Diego scored the game's next three touchdowns, including back-to-back touchdown runs from Jonah Hodges. His 69-yard touchdown scamper with 11:39 left in the game pushed the Toreros lead to 37-3. Butler scored its only touchdown on the ensuing possession as Will Marty found Cord Collier for a 13-yard catch-and-carry.

San Diego quarterback Anthony Lawrence finished with 326 passing yards while completing 23-of-33 passes, including a touchdown throw. Hodges amassed 128 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carres. Marty paced Butler with a 15-for-39 passing performance for 177 yards.

Marist 24, Campbell 7
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist's first win of 2016 couldn't have come at a better time as it scored 21 second-half points to secure a 24-7 PFL victory against Campbell, Saturday, at Tenney Stadium.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Marist flipped the script with the second half's opening drive. The Red Foxes went 67 yards in 10 plays and Mike White found Joe Jordan for a three-yard touchdown pass and a 10-7 lead. Marcellus Calhoun later ran for two touchdowns to seal the victory.

Campbell outgained Marist by a staggering 311-95 margin in rushing and a 441-328 advantage overall. However, the Camels lone touchdown came midway through the second quarter when De'Shawn Jones completed an 11-play, 93-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. That was one of two forays into the red zone for Campbell as it was consistently hemmed in in its own end. The Camels started six of their 13 drives inside their own 10-yard line.

White led Marist with 282 total offensive yards, passing for 233 yards on 19-of-37 passes while running for another 39 yards on 11 carries. Meanwhile, Elijah Burress led the Camels running attack with 142 yards on 22 carries.

Dayton 35, Drake 10
DAYTON, Ohio – Dayton remained unbeaten at home, scoring the game's first three touchdowns en route to a 35-10 PFL victory against Drake, Saturday at Welcome Stadium.

Flyers quarterback Alex Jeske broke out early, running for two touchdowns and passing for another in the Flyers 21-0 start. He broke out for a 48-yard run to open the scoring then added a 42-yard touchdown pass to Jack Euritt on the Flyers next possession. He tacked on a five-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter and Dayton never looked back.

Drake broke through with a Josh Lee 27-yard field goal just before halftime. The Bulldogs lone touchdown came late in the third quarter when Grant Kraemer found Zach Zlabis for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Kraemer finished with 247 yards on 22-of-40 passing.

Jeske finished the day with 218 total offensive yards, running for 92 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries while adding 126 yards on 7-of-15 passing. Flyers running back Tucker Yinger added two touchdowns and 172 yards on 21 carries.

Morehead State 29, Valparaiso 26
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Austin Gahafer found Jake Raymond for a four-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds remaining as Morehead State rallied to down Valparaiso, 29-26 in PFL action, Saturday, at Jayne Stadium.

Valparaiso grabbed a 26-21 lead early in the fourth quarter when Ryan Clarke finished an eight-play, 71-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Frank Catrine. The Crusaders went for two and a potential seven-point lead, but the conversion attempt failed. On the ensuing possession, Valparaiso fended off a potential Morehead State scoring drive when Christian Campbell intercepted a pass in the end zone.

Gahafer engineered the Eagles go-ahead drive, completing 8-of-11 passes for 91 yards in a drive that only covered 84 yards. The Eagles had to overcome a pair of holding penalties and a false start penalty during the drive. But five of Gahaafer's passes went for more than 10 yards, including a 10-yard completing to Christian Robinson on 4th-and-four at the Valparaiso 14-yard line that kept the drive alive.

Gahafer completed 24-of-40 passes in the contest for 308 yards and two touchdowns. Raymond caught 10 of those passes for 149 yards, including the game-winning touchdown. Meanwhile, running back Jarrett Morgan posted a 110-yard rushing performance on 20 carries to lead the Valparaiso offense.

Stetson 31, Davidson 27
DAVIDSON, N.C. – In the PFL's other thriller, Stetson's Gaven DeFilippo found Kegan Moore for a six-yard touchdown pass with 1:07 left to help Stetson secure a come-from-behind 31-27 PFL victory against Davidson, Saturday, at Richardson Stadium.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, Davidson scored touchdowns on two quick possessions in the third quarter. Quarterback Stockton McGuire gave the Wildcats a 14-10 lead with a 72-yard scamper. Then after a fumble on a punt return set it up at the Stetson one-yard line, McGuire found Nick Nolting for a five-yard touchdown pass and a 21-10 lead.

Stetson responded as Kegan Moore hit on touchdown runs of 42 and 38 yards, the latter coming after a Hatters interception by Chris Atkins set up a short field. That 24-21 lead would last only until the ensuing possession, as McGuire marshalled Davidson through an eight-play, 80-yard drive that running back Keylan Brown capped with a three-yard run.

Davidson had an opportunity to build a bigger lead when Ben Rowell returned a punt 51 yards to setup the offense at the Stetson 12-yard line. But the Hatter defense did not allow a first down, forcing a 22-yard field goal attempt. Dre Long blocked that field goal, giving Stetson one final chance.

DeFilippo had a hand on every play of the game-winning drive, completing 5-of-10 passes and running twice. However, it was his 31-yard pass completion on 4th-and-four at the Davidson 37-yard line that kept the drive alive. His next pass was the game-winner as he finished the day completing 24-of-43 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns.

McGuire finished with 232 offensive yards, running for 102 yards on 11 carries while completing 12-of-31 passes for 130 yards and two more touchdowns.

Duquesne 54, Jacksonville 35
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dillon Buechel threw for a career-best six touchdowns as Duquesne downed Jacksonville, 54-35 in nonconference action, Saturday, at D.B. Milne Field.

Jacksonville's defense grabbed the momentum on Duquesne's first drive when Gabe Stewart recovered a fumble and returned it 32 yards to setup the offense at the Duquesne 22-yard line. Pernell Rattray cashed in the turnover on the first play from scrimmage when he ran for a 22-yard touchdown.

Duquesne gained control of the contest on both sides of halftime. Buechel closed the first half with an 11-yard pass to A.J. Hines for a 20-14 halftime lead. Out of the break, he threw touchdown passes of 65 and 44 yards to Wayne Capers Jr. in a span of 2:22 and the Dukes grabbed a 24-14 lead.

Jacksonville responded in kind with a pair of touchdowns in a span of 61 seconds. Jared Morris first ran for a five-yard touchdown then connected with Rylan Wells for a 35-yard touchdown pass, trimming the deficit to 34-28. However, the Dolphins would get no closer as Buechel threw touchdown passes on the next two Duquesne drives.

Jacksonville's defense forced three turnovers to help its offense which was outgained by a 619-233 margin in total yardage. Wells completed 9-of-20 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. The Dolphins ran for four touchdowns on just 107 rushing yards.
