JACKSONVILLE defeats Newberry, 17-14

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Three second half interceptions helped Jacksonville hang on for a 17-14 nonconference victory at Newberry, Saturday, at Setzler Field. The Dolphins, who improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2001, led 17-7 after quarterback Kade Bell found running back Jamal Adjamah for a 78-yard touchdown strike with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter. Newberry would strike two possessions later, trimming the deficit to 17-14 with 4:48 left in the third. From there, the Dolphins leaned on their defense with defensive end T.J. Jenkins tackle of Newberry's Braxton Ivory, one yard shy of a first down on its final possession. Bell finished the game completing 20-of-42 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns.

VMI defeats MOREHEAD STATE, 43-40

LEXINGTON, Va. – A 34-yard field goal try split the uprights as time expired to down Morehead State in a 43-40 nonconference loss to VMI, Saturday, at Foster Stadium. Morehead State scored 17 straight points, capped by wide receiver Jake Raymond's 23-yard pass to quarterback Austin Gahafer for a 40-33 lead with 7:12 remaining in the game. But VMI needed just three plays and 57 seconds to cover 77 yards on the ensuing possession, tying the game with 6:15 left. Morehead State would get two more tries to regain the lead, one possession thanks to a fumble forced by safety Dominic Iori and recovered by defensive back Braylyn Cook. But Morehead State could not capitalize and VMI began a slow, methodical drive with 2:46 left that was finished by the game-winning field goal. Gahafer finished 12 yards shy of the Morehead State passing yardage record, finishing the day completing 35-of-62 passes for 447 yards and four touchdowns in addition to his touchdown reception.

Sacred Heart defeats VALPARAISO, 56-3

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Valparaiso could not overcome a five-turnover day in a 56-3 nonconference loss to Sacred Heart, Saturday, at Brown Field. Sacred Heart jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and scored the game's first 42 points. Valparaiso kicker Jacob Newman broke up the shutout with a 39-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Crusaders running back Grayson Bastin had a 113-yard rushing day on seven carries to pace the Valparaiso offense.

CAMPBELL defeats Chowan, 35-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's defense set the tone, holding visiting Chowan to eight net rushing yards and posting six sacks in a 35-3 nonconference victory, Saturday, at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Fighting Camels improve to 2-0 for the first time since returning to the field in 2008. Campbell scored the game's first 28 points with quarterbacks Kameron Bryant and David Salmon each tossing a pair of touchdowns. Chowan broke up the shutout bid courtesy a 27-yard field goal with a 13:52 remaining in the game. Bryant completed 17-of-25 passes for 196 yards and rushed for another 55 yards.

Georgetown defeats Marist, 34-7

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Marist surrendered the game's first 24 points and dropped a 34-7 nonconference decision to Georgetown, Saturday, at Multi-Sport Field. Georgetown capped its game-opening 24-point run with a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown at the 11:41 mark of the second quarter. Marist would score on the ensuing possession, quarterback Mike White finding wideout Dylan Clay from seven yards out. That would be the Red Foxes only score as they committed three turnovers in the game. White, making his first collegiate start, completed 16-of-32 passes for 177 yards and the touchdown.

North Dakota defeats DRAKE, 21-18

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Drake's furious second half run came up short in a 21-18 nonconference loss to North Dakota, Saturday, at Alerus Center. The Bulldogs trailed 21-0 at halftime but kicker Josh Lee's 34-yard field goal broke the seal on the offense. Linebacker John Hugunin added a safety when he sacked North Dakota quarterback Keaton Studsrud in the end zone to start the fourth quarter. Drake then wrapped up a 68-yard drive with running back Conley Wilkins one-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 21-11. The Bulldogs scored on what would be there final drive when quarterback Andy Rice found tight end Eric Saubert for a 13-yard touchdown to set the final score as the ensuing on-side kick was recovered by North Dakota to seal the game. North Dakota finished the game with a narrow 285-275 advantage in total yardage. Rice led Drake with a 23-of-42, 237-yard passing performance.

Mercer defeats STETSON, 57-14

MACON, Ga. – Stetson saw three turnovers turned into 21 points in a 57-14 nonconference loss to Mercer, Saturday, at Five Star Stadium. The Hatters trailed 14-7 with 5:29 left in the first quarter after quarterback Ryan Tentler found wide receiver Chris Crawford to a 12-yard touchdown. But Mercer scored the next 37 points, with three scoring drives lasting just one play each, to build a 51-7 halftime lead. Tentler completed 8-of-16 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown but also was victimized by two interceptions in the loss.

BUTLER defeats Franklin, 41-14

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Quarterback Matt Shiltz threw three touchdowns and ran for another all in the first half to lead Butler past Franklin, 41-14, in Saturday nonconference action at the Butler Bowl. Behind Shiltz, the Bulldogs got out to a quick start and built a 31-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Shiltz played just 1:06 into the fourth quarter completing 16-of-26 passes for 189 yards and ran nine times for another 83 yards.

Catawba defeats DAVIDSON, 35-21

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Running back Jeffrey Keil ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns but it wasn't enough as Davidson fell to Catawba, 35-21, in nonconference action, Saturday, at Richardson Stadium. Keil's first touchdown was a 21-yard dash that tied the game 7-7 in the first quarter. Yet Catawba scored the game's next 18 points to build a 25-7 lead. Keil would find the end zone again just before halftime with a three-yard touchdown run but Davidson trailed 25-14 at halftime and could not catch Catawba.

SAN DIEGO defeats Western New Mexico, 45-21

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Twenty-one fourth quarter points helped San Diego break open a close game en route to a 45-21 nonconference victory against Western New Mexico, Saturday, at Torero Stadium. The Toreros led by just 10 points, 24-14, after three quarters but scored the first 21 points of the fourth quarter to build a 31-point lead. Quarterback Anthony Lawrence found wideouts Justin Priest and Brian Riley for touchdown on back-to-back drives and running back Jereke Armstrong dashed for a 54-yard touchdown to cap the outburst. Lawrence completed 20-of-34 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns while Armstrong carried the ball 14 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
