PFL's unbeaten triumvirate each return home to defend unblemished marks
» Back

Will it be trick or treat for the PFL’s three unbeaten teams in Week 9? Butler, Dayton and Drake – each 4-0 in PFL action – all return home after road victories in Week 7. Marist returns home looking for its fourth straight victory while Campbell and Morehead State each seek their season’s first PFL victory.

Davidson at Butler, Noon
Location: Indianapolis, Ind. (Butler Bowl)
Series: BUT leads, 5-0
Streak: BUT, five wins

[Davidson Game Notes | Butler Game Notes]
Butler is now just one of three unbeaten teams in the FCS – along with Montana and Richmond – and hosts Davidson, a team that has not won a road game this season. The Bulldogs are 7-0 for the first time since 1983 after holding on for a victory at Campbell last week. The Wildcats have lost two straight games after surrendering a 21-16 loss to PFL co-leader Drake. It will be the second-straight week Davidson has met one of the league’s three unbeaten squads.
Who to watch: Davidson senior defensive lineman Alex Griswold ranks fifth among PFL tacklers in sacks (0.75 pg) and eighth in tackles for loss (1.42 pg) this season. He leads a Davidson defense which enters Saturday's contest ranked eighth in scoring defense (25.7 ppg) and sixth in total defense (335.0 ypg) among PFL squads. Butler sophomore quarterback Andrew Huck leads the PFL's top-ranked offense (33.1 ppg, 400.4 ypg) with a league-best 262.1 yards of total offense this season. However, a lot of credit goes to Butler's offensive line – headed by sophomore center Rob Hobson – which has allowed a league-low four sacks this season.

Valparaiso at Marist, Noon
Location: Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (Tenney Stadium)
Series: First Meeting

[Valparaiso Game Notes | Marist Game Notes]
Marist has won three straight contests and seeks its first four-game win streak since 1997 when it hosts Valparaiso which is seeking its first PFL victory this season. The Red Foxes won their first road PFL game last week at Morehead State, coming back from a 14-point deficit. The Crusaders were held to a season-low 60 yards in its loss at Dayton last week and will seek to bounce back on the road, where they have posted their only victory this season.
Who to watch: Valparaiso has battle the injury bug all season with 35 different players recording a start this season. The Crusaders offensive line – sophomore Nate Blair, sophomore Gavin Grillo, junior Steve Lara, sophomore Ferdinand Velez, and senior David Wisniewski – has been the only unit unscathed, with all five starting every game this season. Marist  senior wide receiver James LaMacchia ranks fourth among FCS receivers in yardage (111.3 ypg) this season and is 14th in receptions (6.7 pg). However, he only has three touchdowns this season, as five different Red Foxes have more than two touchdowns this season.

Morehead State at Campbell, 1 p.m.
Location: Buies Creek, N.C. (Barker-Lane Stadium)
Series: MOR leads, 1-0
Streak: MOR, one win

[Morehead State Game Notes | Campbell Game Notes]
Morehead State travels to Campbell as both teams seek their first PFL victories this season. The Eagles hit the road after surrendering a 14-point lead in a loss to Marist last week. It will be Morehead State’s ninth-straight contest and will be the
last PFL team to take an off week when they get a break in Week 10. The Camels have seen their margin of defeat dwindle in each of its last four losses, shrinking to just seven points in a loss to co-leader Butler last week.
Who to watch:  The ground game may be the deciding factor in Saturday's contest. Campbell's offense – behind junior quarterback Daniel Polk (52.9 ypg) and sophomore running back CJ Oates (51.9 ypg – leads the league with 189.0 yards per game. However, Morehead State is the PFL's stingiest run defense, allowing just 62.4 yards per game. On the flip side, Morehead State has had trouble running the ball, averaging only 96.4 yards per game – worst among league squads. But the Eagles offense will run into a Campbell rush defense ranked last in the PFL, permitting opponents 221.1 rushing yards per game.

San Diego at Dayton, 1 p.m.
Location: Dayton, Ohio (Welcome Stadium)
Series: DAY leads, 12-4
Streak: DAY, two wins

[San Diego Game Notes | Dayton Game Notes]
Dayton will treat area children with its annual Toys for Tots drive while seeking to avoid a trick from visiting San Diego. The Flyers have rebounded from a season-opening loss with six straight victories – all after senior Steve Valentino made the transition from wide receiver to quarterback – including a 38-7 victory at Valparaiso that showcased the Flyers defense (60 yards allowed). San Diego fell to Jacksonville, 34-16, last week – its second-straight home loss and now returns to the road where its 2-2 this season.
Who to watch: Senior quarterback Steve Valentino has led Dayton to six consecutive wins since taking over signal-calling duties earlier this season. A dual-threat, he ranks fifth among FCS quarterbacks in rushing, his 67.6 yards per game also ranking him third among all PFL runners. Valentino can also toss the ball, ranking fourth among the league's quarterbacks in passing (182.9 ypg) and pass efficiency (139.6). His counterpart, San Diego redshirt-freshman Sam Scudellari, has performed well since being handed the starting role after the season started. He is ranked sixth among the league's passers in yardage (167.3 ypg) but second in pass efficiency (151.9) in his six appearances this season.

Jacksonville at Drake, 2 p.m.
Location: Des Moines, Iowa (Drake Stadium)
Series: DRA leads, 7-1
Streak: JAC, one win

[Jacksonville Game Notes | Drake Game Notes]
Jacksonville, the league’s only one-loss team, will try to bring one of the league's unbeatens to its level when it travels to Drake. The Dolphins made their longest possible PFL road trip in Week 8, winning at San Diego. Jacksonville follows that with its second-longest possible trip this week. Drake returns home – where it has not lost this season (3-0) – after posting a come-from-behind victory at Davidson last week.
Who to watch: The league's second ranked offense will meet its second-ranked defense in Saturday's contest. Jacksonville boasts a second-ranked offense that is averaging 367.9 yards per game, but has relied heavily on an aerial attack that leads the PFL with 250.4 yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Josh McGregor has 1,688 passing yards and a league-best 20 touchdown throws this season. Drake boasts the league's second-ranked defense, limiting opponents to 253.0 yards per game. Senior defensive end Dain Taylor anchors the Bulldogs defense, ranking second among league tackles in tackles for loss (1.79 pg) and third in sacks (1.00 pg).
