Only four contests dot the Pioneer Football League's Week 4 schedule with five teams taking the week off before a full slate of league action in Week 5. One league matchup highlights the week's slate with Butler taking to the road to face Morehead State. Dayton, Marist and Valparaiso play the league's three non-conference tilts this week.

Week 5 Previews

San Diego at Butler, 1 p.m.
Location: Indianapolis, Ind..
Series: SAN leads, 12-4
[Butler Game Notes | San Diego Game Notes]

The lone contest between squads with 1-0 PFL mark sees San Diego travel to Butler. The Bulldogs are off to a 4-0 start for the second consecutive season after surprising Morehead State in overtime last weekend. The Toreros took Week 4 off and have won the last seven meetings in the series. Butler last posted a victory against San Diego in the 2001 season.
Who to watch: All eyes will be on San Diego sophomore quarterback Sam Scudellari who took over the reins after senior Sebastian Trujillo left the program for personal reasons. Scudellari was under center for the second half of San Diego's Week 3 PFL victory against Marist and threw the game-winning touchdown with 41 seconds remaining. Butler sophomore quarterback Andrew Huck has led a potent offensive attack, winning three of the PFL's first four "Offensive Player of the Week" honors. He has completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 985 yards and 14 touchdowns in the season's first four weeks.

Davidson at Jacksonville, 1 p.m.
Location: Jacksonville, Fla.
Series: DAV leads, 6-5
[Davidson Game Notes | Jacksonville Game Notes]
Defending PFL champion Jacksonville begins its defense of that title when it hosts Davidson after an off week for both squads in Week 4. The Wildcats were the lone squad to put a blemish on the Dolphins conference record last season.
Davidson came back from a 35-14 third-quarter deficit last season to record a 38-35 victory. Jacksonville won six straight PFL contests following that loss, a streak it takes into Saturday’s contest.
Who to watch: Davidson junior running back Kenny Mantuo posted his season's first 100-yard performance with 135 yards and a touchdown against Campbell iin Week 3. That performance is the bulk of his 232 rushing yards this season and he ranks fourth among the league's rushers with 77.3 yards per game. The Jacksonville defensive line enters this weekend’s game tied with South Dakota State for the nation’s lead in sacks per game with 4.33. Leading the Dolphins in sacks are junior Bradley Burns and senior Haywood Range – each of which is averaging 0.7 sacks per game.

Dayton at Morehead State, 1 p.m.
Location: Morehead, Ky.
Series: DAY leads,9-5
[Dayton Game Notes | Morehead State Game Notes]

Dayton, fresh off a impressive victory, travels to Morehead State, a team that suffered a overtime loss at home. The last three games in this series – all Morehead State victories – have been decided by a total of 15 points. The Flyers improved to 2-0 with senior Steve Valentino taking the snaps as they downed Duquesne in Dayton. The Eagles will seek to rebound from an overtime loss to Butler last weekend at Jayne Stadium.
Who to watch: Dayton senior wideout Justin Watkins caught seven passes for 97 yards and a touchdown at Robert Morris and came back with three for 105 and another TD in the Duquesne win. He leads the Flyers in receiving this season (13 catches for 241 yards), and is fourth in the PFL in yards per game (80.3). Morehead State senior safety Derek Harkness tied a PFL single-game record with three interceptions – all in the game's first 18 minutes – against Butler last week, including one he returned for a touchdown.

Campbell at Marist, 1 p.m.
Location: Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Series: First Meeting
[Campbell Game Notes | Marist Game Notes]

The league’s two newest members will meet for the first time when Campbell travels to Marist. Both teams are seeking their first PFL victories. The Camels did not record a victory in their first season and are 0-1 after a loss at Davdison in Week 3. The Red Foxes are 0-2 in their first PFL campaign, with losses to Drake and at San Diego.
Who to watch: Campbell sophomore running back C.J. Oates has averaged a PFL best 92.3 rushing yards per game this season. He also leads the league with 6.4 yards per carry, gaining 277 yards on only 43 carries this season. Marist sophomore quarterback Tommy Reilly was called upon to make his first collegiate start last weekend at Bucknell, subbing for injured senior Chris Debowski. Reilly responded with a 12-of-21, 139-yard performance that included a touchdown toss.

Valparaiso at Drake, 2 p.m.
Location: Des Moines, Iowa
Series: DRA leads, 13-3
[Drake Game Notes | Valparaiso Game Notes]

Valparaiso will be the last squad to start its 2009 PFL campaign when it travels to Drake. The Bulldogs have won the last five in the series with the Crusaders last winning in 2003 courtesy an overtime decision. Both teams enter the outing following a loss in their last contest. Drake fell at South Dakota in Week 3 while Valparaiso fell to Carthage last week.
Who to watch: Drake senior linebacker Cale Hunt is ranked seventh among the PFL's tacklers with 8.7 tackles per game. He gets his first chance to play since picking up the league's "Defensive Player of the Week" honor in Week 3 following a 10-tackle performance against Marist that also included an interception. Valparaiso senior  running back Ross Weimer surpassed the 100-yard mark for the third time in his career with 112 yards in less than three quarters of action against Carthage last week. He rushed for more than 100 yards twice last season, including a career-best 170-yard performance against Davidson.
