Quiet Week 4 around Pioneer Football League
» Back

Only four contests dot the Pioneer Football League's Week 4 schedule with five teams taking the week off before a full slate of league action in Week 5. One league matchup highlights the week's slate with Butler taking to the road to face Morehead State. Dayton, Marist and Valparaiso play the league's three non-conference tilts this week.

Week 4 Previews

Butler at Morehead State, 1 p.m.
Location: Morehead, Ky.
Series: MOR leads 10-2
[Butler Game Notes | Morehead State Game Notes]

The league’s lone conference battle will pit unbeaten Butler on the road at Morehead State. The Bulldogs have not won at Jayne Stadium in the series but ended a five-game losing streak with a victory at the Butler Bowl last season. Both squads won their Week 3 outings, Morehead State picking up a double-overtime road victory at North Carolina Central while Butler won at home against Hanover.
Who to Watch For: Butler senior wide receiver Dan Bohrer became the school's career touchdown reception leader last week against Hanover. After becoming the program's career receptions leader the week previous, Bohrer caught two touchdown passes and enters the week with 18 career TD catches. Senior H-back Jerrod Pendleton finished with 109 all-purpose yards in Morehead State's double-overtime victory at North Carolina Central last week, his first 100-yard performance this season and the Eagle's second this campaign.

Duquesne at Dayton, 1 p.m.
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Series: Tied, 3-3
[Dayton Game Notes]

Dayton wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule when it hosts Duquesne. It is the second straight Northeast Conference opponent for the Flyers, who won at Robert Morris in Week 3. The Dukes downed the Flyers last season, 24-16, in Pittsburgh.
Who to Watch For: Senior quarterback Steve Valentino, the league's reigning Offensive Player of the Week, made his first collegiate start at quarterback in Dayton's victory at Robert Morris last week. Among the league's active career leaders in both punt return and kick return yardage, Valentino is the Flyers scheduled starter at quarterback in Week 4.

Marist at Bucknell, 1 p.m.
Location: Lewisburg, Pa.
Series: Bucknell leads, 4-0
[Marist Game Notes]

After two consecutive PFL tilts, Marist steps away from league action to meet Bucknell of the Patriot League. It is the fifth straight year the two teams have met and the Red Foxes have yet to post a victory. Last season’s 21-17 loss to the Bison was the closest decision in the series.
Who to Watch For: Senior linebacker Kevin Foley is ranked third among the league's tacklers with 10 tackles per game (30 total). He enters Week 4 action 25 tackles shy of 200 career stops and is ranked fifth on the PFL's active career leaders in tackles behind teammate Nick Andre, a senior linebacker who has 198 career tackles.

Carthage at Valparaiso, 2 p.m.
Location: Valparaiso, Ind.
Series: VAL leads, 1-0
[Valparaiso Game Notes]

Valparaiso, who return to action after an off week, hosts Carthage in a nonconference tilt. It will be the first meeting – and second all-time – between the two teams since the Crusaders won a 60-0 decision in 1950.
Who to Watch For: Senior John Popper is the Crusaders all-purpose guy and ranks eighth in the nation in all-purpose yards averaging 185.5 per game this season. He leads all active PFL kickoff returners with 2,247 return yards and is averaging an impressive 24.2 yards per return during his career.
