SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego wide receiver John Matthews signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent on Sunday. The 6-foot, 200-pound Matthews, a 2008 first-team FCS All-American and Associated Press All-American, received offers from the Colts, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens.

"I had a good feeling about the Colts," said Matthews. "They showed a lot of interest throughout the whole process. It was a very tough decision, but I'm going forward with it and feeling good about it."

Last season Matthews caught 102 balls for 1,478 yards and 21 touchdowns for the 9-2 Toreros. The marks ranked first among all FCS players, in addition to his 9.27 receptions per game average and his 134.36 yards per game average. He was named the Pioneer Football League's Offensive Player of the Year, and finished 7th in the final voting for the Walter Payton Award that is given to the best offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. He leaves USD as the all-time leader in touchdown receptions (50) and receiving yards (3,615). He finished second in the Torero record books for receptions with 195.

His plans call for him to leave for Indianapolis on Thursday.
