March's offseason news and notes from around the Pioneer Football League…

April 21 - The USD football team will close-out its 2009 Spring Practice schedule with its 15th and final workout when they lineup for their annual Blue-White scrimmage this coming Saturday, April 25th, at 11 a.m. at Torero Stadium. Prior to the scrimmage there will be an Alumni Scrimmage from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 am. The Toreros will then meet and greet with alumni before going into their warm-ups and controlled scrimmage. April 19 - A pair of Nick Glavin field goals proved to be the difference in the University of Dayton’s annual Spring Football Game Sunday at Welcome Stadium. Before the game, Flyers announced their 2009 captains – linebacker Drew Fumagalli, defensive tackle Sean Heenan and wide receiver Steve Valentino. All three captains were starter last season, although Fumagalli missed three games due to injuries. Valentino was First Team All-Pioneer Football League in 2009 and Heenan was second team. Ironically, Fumagalli was the only one of the three captains in uniform for the Spring Game, as Heenan and Valentino were held out while the rehab from off-season surgeries. [Complete Story]
April 18 - The University of Dayton and second-year head football coach Rick Chamberlin have announced the Flyers’ schedule for the 2009 season. This year’s 11-game slate includes eight Pioneer Football League games and three non-league contests. Dayton opens the 2009 schedule with a home game against Urbana at Welcome Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Flyers then travel to Robert Morris (Sept. 19), and return home to face Duquesne (Sept. 26) to round out the non-conference portion of the schedule. [Complete Story]
April 18 - Despite 149 yards of total offense and two touchdowns from redshirt freshman running back CJ Oates, the orange-clad Camel defense took Campbell’s Orange & Black Spring Game, 42-34, Saturday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.Oates, a Faison, N.C. native, flashed a big first half, totaling 77 yards receiving on three receptions and 39 yards from scrimmage on seven carries with both of his touchdowns coming in the opening half. The Faison, N.C. native tallied 33 yards on the ground in the second frame. [Complete Story]
April 14 - USD All-America running back J.T. Rogan (Coronado, CA) has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA after missing almost the entire 2008 season because of a left knee injury. Rogan, the school’s all-time leading rusher, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of USD’s 2008 home opener against Marist on August 29th. Rogan, who redshirted his freshman year back in 2004, had to file for medical and hardship waivers to receive the sixth year. He received the good news on April 7th from Brent LeVasseur, USD Academic Counselor/Compliance Coordinator. [Complete Story]
April 9 - After just over a month of spring practices, the University of Dayton football team will conclude the off-season with the annual Red & Blue game at Welcome Stadium on Sunday, April 21. This will be the third straight year the Flyers will be divided into two teams and play an actual game instead of conducting a controlled scrimmage. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. ET. [Complete Story]
April 9 - The Valparaiso University football team has announced that it will now open the 2009 season against Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) on the road in Rensselaer, Ind. as opposed to at Brown due to other scheduling considerations. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. [Complete Story]
