Davidson's Smith, Dayton's Will named to Fred Mitchell Award Watch List

CHICAGO – Two Pioneer Football League kickers were named to the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List, Thursday. Davidson sophomore kicker Trevor Smith and Dayton senior placekicker William Will were among 41 41 Football  Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, III,
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) collegiate place-kickers that were nominated by their colleges for excellence on the football field and in the community.

Smith, of Tampa, Florida, finished his rookie season second among Davidson scorers with 55 points courtesy a 9-of-13 field-goal performance and a 28-of-29 effort on PATs. Off the field, Smith volunteers with special needs children in the Best Buddies Program and built oyster domes and cleaned up beaches in the Tampa Bay area through Baywatch, a local organization for maintaining the waters of Tampa Bay.

Will, of Mokena, Illinois, is on the watch list for a second consecutive season. He finished 2014 with 84 points, making 14-of-19 field goals and 36-of-38 PATs. He also made ESPN SportsCenter's Top Plays when he recovered a fumble on a kickoff which he returned all the way for a touchdown at Marist. He was also First Team All-PFL for the 2013 season.

The breakdown of the 41 placekickers is as follows:

  • Collegiate Division –12 FCS, 11 Division II, 12 Division III, 5 NAIA and 1 NJCAA
  • State – the placekickers play at schools located in 26 different states
  • Year – 16 Seniors, 18 Juniors, 7 Sophomores
  • Fred Mitchell Award 2014 nominees that are on the 2015 Watch List – 22
