JACKSONVILLE defeated SAN DIEGO, 35-18
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Running back Ulysses Bryant ran for a career-high 168 yards on 28 carries to lead Jacksonville past San Diego, 35-18, in the 2014 Pioneer Football League opener, Saturday, at newly renovated D.B. Milne Field. Bryant's two touchdowns both came in the second quarter. His five-yard scoring run gave Jacksonville a 14-0 lead, then his four-yard run with 1:45 left in the quarter gave Jacksonville a 21-10 halftime lead it would not relinquish. After falling behind 14-0, San Diego scored 10 straight points, including a nine-yard touchdown pass from Keith Williams to Brandon White, but it was not enough.

Duquesne defeated DAYTON, 33-13
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Duquesne used a 20-3 second quarter to break open a tie game en route to a 33-13 victory against Dayton, Saturday, in nonconference action at Rooney Athletic Field. Leading just 9-6 in the second quarter the Dukes used a 75-yard interception return and an 84-yard punt return to expand its lead to 23-6 and didnt look back. Kicker William Will's 38 and 47 yard field goals accounted for Dayton's first-half scoring while Connor Kacsor's seven-yard touchdown run wrapped up UD's scoring. Kacsor finished with 84 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

VMI defeated DAVIDSON, 52-24
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI jumped out to a 24-3 halftime lead didn't look back in a 52-24 win against Davidson, Saturday, in nonconference action at Alumni Memorial Field. Davidson running back ran 10 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, dashing in from 15 yards in the third quarter and from one yard out in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver William Morris had a standout 208-yard effort on 16 receptions, including a 26-yard touchdown reception to start the third quarter.

Western Illinois defeated DRAKE, 38-13
MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois scored 24 unanswered points to start the second half in a 38-13 victory against Drake, Saturday, in nonconference action at Hanson Field. Western Illinois scored the game's first 14 points only to see Drake battle back with 10 second-quarter points. Quarterback Cody Thibault found Michael Hudson for a 10-yard touchdown to get Drake on the board. Kicker Benjamin Tesson added a 43-yard field goal as Drake closed within four points, 14-10, at halftime. The Leathernecks scored the first 24 points of the second half, Drake breaking the run with Tesson's 35-yard field goal that provided the game's final points.

Youngstown State defeated BUTLER, 44-13
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Butler jumped out to a 10-3 lead after the first quarter but could not hold on in a 44-13 loss to Youngstown State, Saturday, in nonconference action at Stambaugh Stadium. Butler opened the game's scoring when quarterback Matt Schiltz connected with Daniel Cotter for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Jonathan Treloard added a 22-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 10-3 lead after one quarter. Youngstown State outscored Butler 28-3 in the second quarter to break open the contest. Penguins receiver Jelani Berassa caught six passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Shiltz led Butler with a 21-for-31, 221-yard passing performance and 75 rushing yards.

Mercer defeated STETSON, 49-0
DeLAND, Fla. – Mercer raced out to a 35-point halftime lead en route to a 49-0 nonconference victory against Stetson, Saturday, at Spec Martin Stadium. The Bears out-gained Stetson by a 508-244 margin, including a 275-105 margin on the ground. Mercer running back Alex Lakes led all rushers with 13 carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns.

Eastern Kentucky defeated MOREHEAD STATE, 55-13
RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky scored 46 first-half points in a 55-13 victory against Morehead State, Saturday, in nonconference action at Roy Kidd Stadium. Eastern Kentucky used five touchdown plays of 30-plus yards in the victory. Morehead State broke through with quarterback Austin Gahafer's one-yard touchdown sneak in the third quarter. Gahafer would find Christian Robinson for a 22-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Gahafer would complete 29-of-49 passes for 272 yards in the loss.

Georgetown defeated MARIST, 27-7
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Zach Adler's 91-yard punt return for a touchdown was Marist's lone score in a 27-7 loss to Georgetown, Saturday, in nonconference action at Tenney Stadium. Georgetown scored the game's first 20 points, including a 48-yard interception return early in the third quarter, and didn't look back. Marist running back Atiq Lucas ran 22 times for 80 yards in a game that saw the two teams combine for just 428 yards of offense.
