SAN DIEGO 51, MOREHEAD STATE 34
MOREHEAD, Ky. – For a second straight week, quarterback Anthony Lawrence was responsible for five touchdowns and led San Diego to a 51-34 PFL victory against Morehead State, Saturday, at Jayne Stadium.
San Diego scored on each of its first three drives while Morehead State kept pace with scores on two of its first four drives, leading to a 21-14 Toreros lead midway though the second quarter. However, San Diego scored the first half's final 10 points and was the first to score in the third quarter to break the game open, 38-14, with 11:42 left in the third frame and never looked back.
Lawrence completed 19-of-30 passes for 354 yards and five touchdowns to pace the Toreros, hitting five different receivers for his five scores.
Lawson Page paced Morehead State with both a 100-yard rushing day and a 242-yard passing performance, finishing with four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). He becomes the first Eagles quarterback with consecutive 100-rushing days since David Dinkins.
Columbia 34, MARIST 24
NEW YORK – Juston Christian caught seven passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns but Marist dropped a 34-24 contest to Columbia, Saturday, at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.
Christian's 274-yard performance was one yard shy of the PFL record for receiving yards set by Valparaiso's Rob Giancola in 2003. His three touchdown receptions went for 61, 12 and 84 yards, the last of those giving the Red Foxes a 21-17 lead early in the third quarter. However, Columbia scored the game's next two touchdowns and the teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter to set the final score.
DAVIDSON 44, JACKSONVILLE 37
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson raced out to a 44-9 lead thanks to a 21-point third quarter then held off a furious Jacksonville charge for a 44-37 PFL victory, Saturday, at Richardson Stadium.
Davidson looked poised to run away in the third quarter with three scoring drives capped by touchdown runs by James Story, Keylan Brown and Pat Tabor. The 21-point frame put the Wildcats ahead 44-9 headed into the fourth quarter.
Jacksonville battled back in the fourth with Calvin Turner Jr. marshalling four touchdown drives. He capped three of the drives with scoring runs of his own and Irvin Riley capped another as the Dolphins closed to within a touchdown, 44-37, with a minute left. But a Jacksonville on-side kick attempt was recovered by Davidson to end the rally.
Davidson finished with 315 rushing yards, Story leading the effort with 10 carries for 70 yards and three touchdowns. Jacksonville countered with 340 rushing yards, Turner Jr. finishing with 202 rushing yards on 30 carries while scoring three times.
DAYTON 53, VALPARAISO 20
DAYTON, Ohio – Dayton used a 23-point second quarter to break open a close contest en route to a 53-20 PFL victory against Valparaiso, Saturday, at Brown Field.
Leading 14-7 after one quarter, Dayton used a trio of big plays in the second to take control of the contest. Tucker Yinger and Jack Cook connected on a 34-yard scoring pass for the second quarter's first score. After the Dayton defense forced a three-and-out, Kyle Butz returned the Crusaders' punt 51 yards for a touchdown and a 28-7 lead. Butz then closed the second quarter with a 60-yard touchdown reception from Cook for a 37-13 halftime lead that would stand up.
Valparaiso got a 116-yard rushing performance from Kyle Cartales, who rushed for an 11-yard score to end the day's scoring.
Cook completed 19-of-22 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for another 57 yards, to pace the Dayton outing.
DRAKE 36, BUTLER 6
DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake's defense pitched a shutout through three and a half quarters in a 36-6 PFL victory against Butler, Saturday, at Drake Stadium.
While the Drake defense was holding Butler at bay, the Bulldogs offense raced out to a 27-0 lead. Grant Kraemer threw a pair of touchdowns, one each to Zach DeLeon and Steven Doran, while Braeden Hartwig ran for two other scores.
Butler would break through in the fourth quarter as Will Marty found Stephen Dennis for a 21-yard pass. But the ensuing PAT was blocked and Drake's Zac Rujawitz returned it for a two-point defensive conversion to set the final score.
Kraemer completed 17-of-26 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns to pace Drake. Marty led Butler with a 16-of-37 passing outing for 134 yards.
