BUTLER 24, MOREHEAD STATE 21
INDIANAPOLIS – Devin Aquilar picked off a pass with less than two minutes remaining to help Butler secure a 24-21 PFL victory against Morehead State, Saturday, at Sellick Field.
Morehead State (1-3, 0-1 PFL) scored on possessions bracketing the first-quarter break, taking a 14-7 lead. However, Butler scored the game's next 17 points, tying the game on a Brad Sznajder nine-yard run in the second quarter before taking the lead on a Will Marty-to-Pace Temple pass that was the third quarter's only score.
Butler (3-1, 1-0 PFL) extended its lead early in the fourth quarter when Drew Bevelhimer connected on a 42-yard field goal. The Eagles would slash their deficit to three points on the ensuing drive which was capped by a Lawson Page-to-Malik Richards tochdown throw. However, the Eagles next drive ended with an interception and they could not extend the game on their final drive.
Sznajder ran for 105 yards on 24 carries to pace the Butler offense. Marty completed 10-of-23 passes for 134 yards, finding Temple five times for 85 yards.
Page paced the Eagles with 109 yards on 19 carries and added 206 yards on 19-of-36 passing.
MARIST 28, DAYTON 17
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist's first win of 2018 came at an opportune time as Jacob Hallenbeck was responsible for three touchdowns in a 28-17 victory against Dayton, Saturday, in PFL action at Tenney Stadium.
Marist (1-3, 1-0 PFL) scored the game's first 14 points then rallied from a brief deficit by scoring the game's final 14 points. Hallenbeck ran for a touchdown midway through the second quarter to give the Red Foxes a 14-0 lead. A 24-yard run late in the third quarter gave Marist a 21-17 lead that Hallenbeck would solidify with a 56-yard touchdown strike to Juston Christian early in the fourth frame.
After falling behind early, Dayton (2-3, 1-1 PFL) would battle back with 17 consecutive points around the halftime break. Richie Warfield's four-yard touchdown run got the Flyers on the board just before halftime. Dayton would open the third quarter with a Joseph Bruni 26-yard field goal and a Jack Cook-to-Matt Tunnacliffe 24-yard touchdown pass to take a 17-14 lead. hHowever, Dayton would not score again in the contest.
Hallenbeck completed 12-of-15 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown while adding two more scores on four rush attempts totalling 25 yards.
Cook completed 16-of-35 passes for 168 yards, running for another 34, to lead Dayton.
DRAKE 41, JACKSONVILLE 9
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Grant Kraemer threw for four touchdowns as Drake stormed past Jacksonville, 41-9, in the PFL opener for both teams, Saturday, at D.B. Milne Field.
With Kraemer under center, Drake (2-1, 1-0 PFL) scored the game's first 31 points to take a 31-0 lead into halftime. Kraemer found wideout Steven Doran for a trio of touchdown passes, connecting from 25, 43 and one yard in the half.
Jacksonville (1-2, 0-1 PFL) got on the board late in the third quarter courtesy its special teams as Tyree Clarke blocked a punt that resulted in a safety. Calvin Turner Jr. got the Dolphins offense on the board with a 73-yard touchdown dash early in the fourth quarter, but the score only slashed the Drake lead to 38-9.
Kraemer completed 16-of-24 passes for 176 yards, finding Doran five times for 103 yards, to lead Drake.
Turner Jr.'s 73-yard dash was a big chunk of his 27-carry, 137-yard rushing outing the led the Jacksonville offense.
DAVIDSON 40, VALPARAISO 35
VALPARAISO, Ind. – James Story's touchdown with 56 seconds left helped Davidson end a 17-game PFL losing streak with a 40-35 victory against Valparaiso, Saturday, at Brown Field.
In a sprited game that saw the two teams combine for 945 offensive yards and 53 first downs, Davidson (4-1, 1-0 PFL) had the upper hand on the stat sheet with 545 yards and 33 first downs. However, they trailed 35-34 with 4:19 left after Valparaiso's Chris Duncan scored from three yards out.
But Davidson quarterback Tyler Phelps and running back Williams Wicks led the Wildcats on a nine-play, 75-yard drive on the ensuing possession. Phelps completed two passes for 46 yards and ran for a first down while Wicks broke off a pair of 17-yard runs to get the Wildcats inside the red zone and then to within a yard of the go-ahead score to setup Story's scoring dive.
Valparaiso (0-4, 0-1 PFL) would twice hold a one-point lead in the contest. The Crusaders led 21-20 after a Kyle Cartales two-yard touchdown run in the second quarter but Davidson struck for two scores before the halftime break to take a 34-21 lead. Valparaiso then scored the game's next two touchdowns, Duncan passing for one and running for another, to build its 35-34 lead late in the fourth quarter.
Wicks ran for 178 yards on 21 carries, leading a Davidson run game that amassed 379 yards and four touchdowns on 67 carries. Phelps passed for 166 yards and ran for another 49 yards.
Valparaiso wideout Griffin Norberg caught four passes for 102 yards and a touchdown and Jean Rene caught two more touchdown passes.
SAN DIEGO 49, STETSON 10
SAN DIEGO – Defending PFL champion San Diego scored the first 28 points en route to a PFL-opening 49-10 victory against Stetson, Saturday, at Torero Stadium.
San Diego (2-2, 1-0 PFL) saw quarterback Anthony Lawrence pass and run for a touchdown in the first quarter before running back Terrence Smith ran for another pair of touchdowns in the second quarter as it raced out to a 28-0 lead. The Toreros then tacked on two more touchdowns in the third quarter as Lawrence found Michael Bandy twice for scores in the frame.
Stetson (3-1, 1-1 PFL) got on the scoreboard just before halftime as Colin McGovern found Steven Burdette for a 16-yard touchdown to trim the deficit to 28-7 at the break. But the Hatters would only score again when Jonny Messina hit a 32-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
Lawrence passed for 438 yards and four touchdowns while completing 28-of-33 passes, putting together his best passing outing since a 453-yard passing day in 2015 – against Stetson. Bandy caught eight of those passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
Steven Burdette caught eight passes for 121 yards to lead Stetson. McGovern completed 13-of-19 passes for 189 yards.
