TOREROS CLAIM NINTH PFL TITLE, LEAGUE’S AQ SPOT | San Diego clinched its ninth PFL title all-time in Week 11. The Toreros also have won four straight league crowns and all nine of their titles have come since winning the 2005 championship. San Diego also won the PFL’s automatic qualifying spot in the upcoming NCAA Division I Football Championship.
SAN DIEGO EXTENDS PFL RECORD WIN STREAK | San Diego posted its 20th consecutive PFL victory with a Week 11 win at Drake. It is the second longest active conference win streak in Division I entering Week 11, trailing only Ohio Valley Conference member Jacksonville State’s 31-game conference win streak.
VALPARAISO SEEKS RARIFIED AIR | Valparaiso’s resurgence saw it post a fourth PFL victory when it defeated Butler to win the Hoosier Helmet in Week 11. With the win, the Crusaders posted a fifth overall win for the first time since 2007 and a fourth league victory for the first time since 1968. Valparaiso seeks a winning season for the first time since 2003 but will have to down a Dayton team it has just two wins against all time.
CAMEL’S SMITH IS FCS’ LEADING RUSHER | Campbell quarterback Daniel Smith’s 289-yard rushing performance against Davidson in Week 10 catapulted him atop the FCS rushing leaders. He finished the season (Campbell is off in Week 12) with a FCS-leading 1,269 rushing yards while he ranks second nationally with 126.9 yards per game. Smith also finished his season ranked fourth in rushing touchdowns (12) and leading all FCS runners with 9.13 yards per carry.
TOREROS PETERSEN LEADS THREE FCS LISTS | San Diego fifth-year defensive lineman Jonathan Petersen, a Buck Buchanan Award Watch List member, enters Week 12 as the FCS leader in sacks (1.20 per game) and tackles for loss (1.90) while ranking second in fumbles forced (0.50 per game). Among FCS active career leaders, he ranks No. 1 in total sacks (38.0), sacks per game (0.84) and tackles for loss (1.51) as well as No. 3 in forced fumbles per game (0.31).
DUGGER’S RICE RESUME | Davidson freshman running back Wesley Dugger also was named to the Jerry Rice Watch List. He is ranked No. 8 among FCS runners in rushing yardage (1,020 yards), No. 10 in rushing yards per game (102.0) and No. 4 in total carries (205).
LAWRENCE MAKING PAYTON AWARD PUSH | San Diego junior quarterback Anthony Lawrence also was named to Walter Payton Award Watch List. He enters Week 12 ranked among the FCS Top 50 in 11 statistical categories, including No. 2 in passing touchdowns (28), No. 3 in both passing efficiency (175.7) and completion percentage (68.8) and No. 6 in yards per pass attempt (9.07). Lawrence owns a career 160.95 pass efficiency rating that ranks No. 3 among NCAA career active leaders.
FLYERS TO THE BLOCK | Dayton blocked its sixth kick of the season in its Week 9 contest against Butler. The Flyers end their season ranked third among FCS teams in blocked kicks. Redshirt freshman Matt Clifford blocked two kicks in 2017, one of only 23 FCS defenders to block multiple kicks.
OPPORTUNISTIC DEFENSES | Five PFL teams having recorded multiple defensive touchdowns in 2017. Campbell leads the way with four defensive scores while Butler, Marist, Stetson and Valparaiso have turned in two defensive touchdowns this season. Campbell is one of 14 FCS squads with four or more defensive touchdowns this season.
