SAN DIEGO BREAKS PFL RECORD | San Diego posted its 16th consecutive PFL victory with a Week 7 win against Morehead State. The Toreros broke their own record of 15 consecutive wins set from 2005-07.
DOLPHINS NOT DEAD YET | Jacksonville may have suffered its first PFL loss at Butler in Week 7 but it may still have a say in the eventual PFL title. League leaders San Diego and Campbell will play the Dolphins over the next two weeks. If the Dolphins win both, they would take the lead in the league title race. However, if both San Diego and Campbell escape with wins then the league’s tiebreaker may be called into action at week’s end.
DAYTON’S CHAMBERLIN BREAKS MENTOR’S MARK | Dayton head coach Rich Chamberlin notched his 56th PFL victory in his 75th league game, Oct. 7, when the Flyers defeated Drake. He broke the PFL record for coaching victories set by his former head coach Mike Kelley, who posted 55 league wins (71 games) during his storied career. They are the only two coaches in PFL history to record 50 league wins.
FLYERS TO THE BLOCK | Dayton has blocked five kicks through the season’s first half, ranking second among all FCS teams behind only South Carolina State (7). Redshirt freshman Matt Clifford has blocked two kicks in 2017, one of only four FCS defenders to block multiple kicks.
OPPORTUNISTIC CAMELS AND RED FOXES | Campbell and Marist are among a group of just 25 FCS teams with multiple defensive touchdowns this season. The Camels are second among FCS programs with four defensive scores (two interceptions, two fumbles). Marist has two defensive touchdowns (one interception, one fumble) and is tied for 12th among FCS squads.
STINGY BULLDOGS | Butler has not given opponents many opportunities to create off turnovers, committing just three giveaways in 2017 – the third fewest among FCS programs. All three of the Bulldogs turnovers have been passes intercepted as they are the only FCS team without a fumble lost .
DOLPHINS DO RUN | A quick look at the NCAA FCS team leaders reveals Jacksonville’s offense is the subdivision’s No. 3 rushing offense, averaging 305.8 yards per game on the ground. The Dolphins rank sixth in rush attempts (331) and 12th in yards per rush (5.54). Jacksonville has two runners ranked among the FCS Top 100 in yards per game and four ranked among the Top 150.
CAMELS DEFEND | Campbell has picked off a FCS best 16 passes through Week 7 and are ranked No. 4 among FCS teams in both pass efficiency defense (97.00) and scoring defense (11.7 ppg) as well as No. 4 in scoring defense (11.7 ppg). Those Top 10 rankings are due largely to its No. 2 ranking in third-down defense (24.0%) and owning the nation’s best red-zone defense, which has allowed opponent’s just eight scores in a meager 16 opportunities.
TOREROS PETERSEN LEADS THE CHARGE | San Diego defensive lineman Jonathan Petersen continues to be a force, entering Week 8 leading all FCS tacklers with 1.50 sacks per game and ranking second in tackles for loss per game (2.10). Among FCS active career leaders, he ranks No. 1 in total sacks per game (0.85) and forced fumbles (14) as well as No. 2 in both career sacks (35.0) and tackles for loss per game (1.50).
RUSHING LEADERS | The PFL’s youth has run rampant in the season’s first half, as Campbell redshirt freshman quarterback Daniel Smith leads the league with 117.2 yards per game (4th in FCS). Davidson freshman running back Wesley Dugger is 6th nationally at 105.8 yards per game. And proving age has its worth, Dayton senior running back Tucker Yinger rounds out a trio of PFL runner in the FCS Top 15 with his 96.7 yards per game (14th).
