It was rough opening day for the Pioneer Football League as all five teams in action Thursday dropped their season openers.

PIKEVILLE def. MOREHEAD STATE, 13-10
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Turnovers proved costly as Morehead State suffered a 13-10 loss to Pikeville, Thursday, at Jayne Stadium. The Eagles outgained the Bears by a 378-326 margin in total yardage and ran 16 more plays. However, Morehead State suffered three turnovers, including a pair of interception, while forcing none. Pikeville scored on the second half's first possession only to see Morehead State score the game's next 10 points. Rob Harden's 12-yard touchdown run gave Morehead State its only lead, 10-7, with 9:56 left in the game. Four minutes later, the Eagles committed their third turnover and Pikeville turned it into a game-winning 72-yard touchdown drive. MSU quarterback Logan Johnson completed 33-of-53 passes for 271 yards.

NEWARK, Del. – Jacksonville scored the game's first two touchdowns but could not hold off nationally-ranked Delaware, falling 51-35, Thursday at Delaware Stadium. The Dolphins scored the game's first touchdown courtesy quarterback Kade Bell's 21-yard touchdown strike. After Delaware fumbled on the ensuing kickoff return, Bell struck again with a 13-yard touchdown pass for the early 14-0 lead. The two teams settled on a 21-21 tie at halftime, but host Delaware took the lead for good with a field goal on their first possession of the second half. Bell completed 18-of-34 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. Dolphins defensive back Antonio McRae tacked on a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE def. DAYTON, 28-10
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State scored the game's first 14 points en route to a 28-10 victory against Dayton, Thursday, at Stambaugh Stadium. The Flyers were outgained by 440-270 in total yardage, thanks largely to the effort of Penguins running back Adaris Bellamy who ran for 203 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Dayton broke through to start the second half courtesy a William Will field goal. Later in the third quarter, the Flyers pieced together an 8-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a Will Bardo 19-yard pass to Robert Washington for a touchdown.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake's offense was stymied in the fourth quarter of a 21-16 loss to Grand View, Thursday, at Drake Stadium. After closing to withing five points after three quarters, Drake would only cross midfield once on three fourth quarter possession and that drive was snuffed out at the Grand View 49 on an interception. The Bulldogs offense did post 302 offensive yards, but came away with just two third quarter touchdowns, one on running back Gary Scott's two-yard run and the second when quarterback Andy Rice found wideout Michael Hudson for a 24-yard strike. Rice completed 26-of-50 passes for 273 yards.

NORTH DAKOTA def. VALPARAISO, 69-10
FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and did not look back in a 69-10 victory against Valparaiso, Thursday, at the Fargodome. Valparaiso's special teams had a hand in breaking up the shutout, recovering a fumble on a punt return. Four plays later, Crusaders kicker Josh Young split the uprights from 36 yards. The Crusaders offense broke through on their next possession, thanks to a key North Dakota penalty that extended the drive, and led to a 41-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Lehman to wideout Fred Gladney, as Valparaiso trimmed the deficit to 49-10. Sophomore running back Jake Hutson led the Crusaders offense with 20 carries for 72 net yards.
